Ghost 2 vs CAN Phantom: Which Immobiliser Should You Choose?

If you own a Range Rover, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Ford, or any modern vehicle with keyless entry, you've almost certainly come across two names in the same week: Ghost 2 and CAN Phantom. They're the two most widely recommended aftermarket immobilisers in the UK — and they're both designed to solve the same problem: relay theft.

But they work differently, cost differently, fit differently, and suit different drivers. If you're stuck choosing between them, this guide will give you a straight answer based on our day-to-day installer experience across London and Kent.

First — Why You Need an Immobiliser At All

Modern keyless-entry cars are more convenient than ever, but they're also easier to steal. Here's the problem in short:

Relay theft uses two cheap devices — one to pick up the signal from your key fob (even through walls and windows, from inside your house), and one to clone that signal next to your car. The car thinks your key is nearby, unlocks, starts, and drives away. No force, no window damage, no noise.

According to UK insurance data, relay attacks now account for the majority of modern car thefts. High-value models like Range Rover Sport, BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes GLC, and Ford Transit Custom are particularly targeted. Some insurers now require aftermarket immobilisers for comprehensive cover on these vehicles.

Factory immobilisers — the ones built into the car — can't stop relay theft, because the attack works by mimicking your key. An aftermarket immobiliser adds a separate layer that the relay attack can't bypass.

That's where Ghost 2 and CAN Phantom come in.

How They Work (Both Solve the Same Problem, Differently)

Ghost 2 (Autowatch)

Ghost 2 is a CAN-bus-based immobiliser that integrates with your car's existing electronic system. When armed, the vehicle won't start until you enter a PIN sequence using the existing buttons on the dashboard or steering wheel — for example, "steering wheel + / – / – / + / volume-up". Without the correct sequence, the engine simply won't crank, even if a thief has your key or has cloned its signal.

Key characteristics:

  • No visible components — invisible to thieves because there's no added key fob, dongle, or tag
  • No extra key to lose — your PIN is your authentication
  • Thatcham-certified (TQA – approved for insurance)
  • Integrates via CAN-bus — no wire splicing into ignition systems
CAN Phantom (Castlegate)

CAN Phantom takes a slightly different approach. It also uses the car's CAN-bus system, but arming and disarming is typically done via a small secure ADR tag (Authorised Driver Recognition) that must be present in the vehicle to start it. Without the tag, the car won't crank — even with your genuine key.

Some CAN Phantom versions offer PIN-code fallback in case the tag is lost, similar to Ghost 2.

Key characteristics:

  • ADR tag authentication — a second, separate authorisation token
  • Plug-in installation — uses the vehicle's OBD-II port and CAN-bus, typically faster to fit
  • Optional PIN fallback on some versions
  • Thatcham-certified (TQA – approved for insurance)

Which Should You Choose?

Here's our honest working-installer recommendation:

Ghost 2 is best if:
  • You want nothing to carry — no tag, no second fob, just your normal key
  • You're comfortable memorising a 4–6 step PIN sequence
  • You frequently loan your car (you can share the PIN verbally, change it later)
  • You value absolute invisibility — thieves literally can't see there's an immobiliser fitted
CAN Phantom is best if:
  • You prefer a physical token you can keep separately from your key (e.g. in a wallet or pocket — not next to the keys the thief might steal together)
  • You want faster installation
  • You don't want to remember a PIN sequence
  • You have multiple authorised drivers and prefer managing them via tags

In general, Ghost 2 appeals to drivers who value total invisibility and prefer not to carry a separate tag. CAN Phantom appeals to drivers who prefer physical token authentication and to fleet operators managing multiple authorised drivers per vehicle. Both are excellent choices — the "right" one depends on your preferences, not on one being objectively better.

What About Cost?

Both systems typically start from £150 for installation — the price varies based on vehicle make, model, and complexity of the CAN-bus setup. Here's what affects final cost:

  • Vehicle model: some cars (especially newer Range Rovers and BMWs with highly integrated electronics) take longer to install
  • Installation location: mobile installation at your home or office is included in our pricing
  • Any additional features: e.g. trackers, keyless-entry blockers, or auxiliary security

The Bigger Picture — Multi-Layer Security

While both Ghost 2 and CAN Phantom are excellent standalone solutions, the most security-conscious owners combine them with other measures:

  • Faraday pouch for your key fob at home (blocks relay attack at the source)
  • Steering wheel lock (visual deterrent)
  • Tracker (GPS-based recovery if the car is somehow still stolen)
  • OBD port protection (prevents thieves programming a new key via the diagnostic port)

Which Cars Benefit Most?

These are the vehicles most commonly targeted for aftermarket immobiliser installation across the UK:

  • Range Rover / Range Rover Sport / Evoque — the most stolen vehicle in the UK for several consecutive years
  • BMW X5, X6, 3 Series, 5 Series
  • Audi Q5, Q7, A4, A6
  • Mercedes-Benz GLC, GLE, C-Class, E-Class
  • Ford Transit Custom (both for cargo protection and vehicle theft)
  • Toyota Hilux, Land Cruiser (heavily targeted by organised theft rings)

If you drive any of these and don't currently have an aftermarket immobiliser, it's a genuine priority. Insurance companies increasingly expect it, and replacement cost after theft is catastrophic.
