Ford Transit Ignition Problems & Van Key Guide — Key Won't Turn, Lost Keys, Costs (UK)

Quick answer: a worn Ford Transit ignition barrel is repaired or replaced at your van from £150, call-out and labour included; a lost or broken Transit key is cut and programmed at the vehicle from £79, all keys lost from £119. The price depends on the model year (Tibbe key, flip key or keyless), whether the barrel can be re-pinned to your existing key, and whether the ignition switch behind it is also faulty — call 07777 676261 with your registration and we'll confirm the price before we set off.

This guide covers the Transit Mk6, Mk7 and Mk8, the Transit Custom (both generations) and the Transit Connect: why their ignitions wear out faster than cars', how to tell a barrel fault from a switch fault, what happens when you've lost every key, and what the dealer will charge you compared with a mobile repair at the van.

Which version of the problem do you have?

  • A. Key needs a wiggle, feels gritty, works some mornings and not others → worn ignition barrel, early stage (see Fix 3 — repair, not replacement).
  • B. Key won't turn at all and the steering wheel is locked → steering lock engaged, or the barrel has finally seized (see Fix 1, then Fix 3).
  • C. Key turns all the way, dash lights on, engine doesn't crank → not the barrel: battery, starter or the ignition switch (see Fix 2, then Fix 4).
  • D. Key snapped off in the ignition → extraction and usually a new barrel (see Fix 3).
  • E. No keys at all — lost, stolen, or the only one is broken → all keys lost, done at the van (see "Lost every key" below).

Why Transit ignitions wear out

A working van is started ten to twenty times a day, often with a heavy bunch of keys hanging off the ignition. The wafers inside the barrel — the small brass plates the key lifts into line — wear a fraction with every turn. On a car that takes fifteen years to matter. On a Transit it can be five.

The model matters too. The Transit Mk6 (2000–2006) and first-generation Connect vans use the Tibbe key — the round, notched Ford key. Tibbe barrels are robust but the keys wear. From the Mk7 (2006 on), the Transit Custom and the Mk8 use a conventional two-track key with a transponder chip, and later Customs and Mk8s are keyless. Different keys, same barrel wear.

Theft attempts are the other cause. Transits and Transit Customs are targeted; a screwdriver in the ignition or a damaged door lock leaves you with a barrel that turns freely but does nothing, or one that won't take the key at all.

Fix 1 — Release the steering lock (30 seconds, free)

If the key goes in but won't turn and the wheel is solid, the steering lock is loaded against the barrel. Turn the wheel firmly left and right while turning the key gently — don't force the key. If it works once and then happens again the next morning, the barrel is worn and Fix 3 is coming.

Fix 2 — Rule out the battery and the starter

If the key turns freely but the engine doesn't crank, check the obvious before anyone touches the ignition: dash lights dim or dead means battery; a single loud click means starter or a bad earth; rapid clicking means battery again. A van that has sat over a weekend with the interior light on will do all of this. If the lights are bright and there's still nothing when you turn the key, it's the ignition switch — Fix 4.

Fix 3 — Ignition barrel: repair first, replace only if needed

Repair (most Transits with a wiggly key): we remove the barrel at the van, replace the worn wafers and springs, and re-pin it to your existing key. You keep one key for doors and ignition, and the van starts like it did when it was new. Usually under an hour on the driveway or at the roadside.

Replace (seized barrel, theft damage, snapped key inside): a new barrel fitted and pinned to your current key wherever possible, so you still don't end up carrying two. A snapped key is extracted first — don't try to fish it out with pliers, it pushes the fragment deeper and damages the wafers.

Either way: from £150, call-out and labour included, 2-year warranty. We confirm barrel or switch at the van before fitting anything.

Ignition barrel stripped down on the workbench in the back of our van, with wafers and tweezers laid out

Not sure whether it's the barrel, the switch or the battery? A quick call to 07777 676261 usually settles it in a couple of minutes — before you spend anything.

Fix 4 — Ignition switch (key turns, nothing happens)

Behind the barrel sits the electrical switch that tells the van to crank when the key reaches the start position. It fails on high-mileage Transits in a recognisable way: the van starts one time in three, cuts out when you let the key spring back, or the key goes all the way round with the lights on and nothing else. It's a separate part and a separate repair — done at the vehicle, from £150, and you do not need to tow the van to have it diagnosed. See our ignition barrel and switch repair service.

Lost every key to the van?

All keys lost on a Transit is a single visit. We open the van without damage, read the immobiliser data at the vehicle, and cut and programme a new key — Tibbe, two-track or keyless — then delete the old keys so a stolen or found key is useless. We recommend two keys on the same visit; a van on one key is a van that will do this again. From £119 at the van, price confirmed before we set off. Prices by model and year are on our Ford Transit key replacement page.

Stolen keys are the one case where we'll also talk to you about security: deleting the old key from the immobiliser stops the van being started with it, but a Ghost 2 immobiliser is what stops the next attempt.

Models we see this on

  • Ford Transit Mk6 (2000–2006) — Tibbe key and barrel; worn keys are the usual cause, not the barrel
  • Ford Transit Mk7 (2006–2013) — the classic worn barrel: wiggly key, then seized with the steering lock on
  • Ford Transit Mk8 (2014 on) — barrel wear on high-mileage vans; keyless on later trims
  • Ford Transit Custom (2012–2023) — the ignition we see most; barrel wear and theft-attempt damage
  • Ford Transit Custom (2023 on) — keyless; key faults rather than barrel faults
  • Ford Transit Connect (2002 on) — Tibbe on the first generation, two-track from 2013
  • Also weekly: Mercedes Sprinter and Vito (electronic EIS — see our Mercedes EIS guide), Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Citroën Relay and Peugeot Boxer

If yours isn't listed, call — it doesn't mean we can't help.

Pricing — and how it compares to the dealer

  • Ignition barrel repair or replacement, at the van: from £150 (call-out and labour included)
  • Ignition switch repair or replacement: from £150
  • Replacement Transit key, cut and programmed at the van (you still have one): from £79
  • All keys lost, new key cut and programmed at the van: from £119
  • Second key in the same visit: discounted — ask when you call

The dealer route for a Transit ignition is a recovery truck (£100–300 before anything is fixed), a barrel and a new set of keys on order, and the van off the road for the wait — an expensive week for a van that earns its living. We confirm the fault at the vehicle before quoting, and the price we give on the phone is the price you pay. See the full price list.

How Royale Car Keys handles a Transit ignition job

  1. Phone diagnosis (free): you describe what the key does; we tell you barrel, switch or battery, and the price.
  2. On-site arrival: the van carries barrels, key blanks and the programming equipment.
  3. Proper diagnosis at the vehicle: we confirm the fault before fitting anything.
  4. Same-day fix where possible: if a part has to be ordered, we say so before starting.
  5. Warranty: 2 years on the repair.
  6. Payment: card, cash or transfer when the job is done; invoiced for fleets and sole traders.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a replacement Ford Transit key?

Cut and programmed at the van, from £79 if you still have a working key and from £119 if you've lost them all. The dealer typically charges a lot more and needs the van brought in.

How much does a Transit ignition barrel replacement cost?

From £150 at the van, call-out and labour included, and the new barrel is pinned to your existing key wherever possible, so you're not paying for a new key as well. Most worn barrels are repaired rather than replaced.

Can you replace a Transit Custom ignition barrel at the roadside?

Yes — the barrel comes out of the column at the van. Most jobs take under an hour at the roadside or on your driveway.

My Transit key turns but the van won't start — is that the ignition?

Probably the ignition switch rather than the barrel, once the battery and starter are ruled out. It's a separate part, diagnosed and fixed at the van from £150.

Is this the same as a key stuck in the ignition?

Related but different. A key that won't come out is usually the steering lock rather than a worn barrel — our key stuck in ignition guide walks through the checks before you call anyone.

Can a Transit be stolen without the keys — and does a new barrel stop it?

Older Transits and Customs are targeted, and a new barrel only fixes the barrel. If security is the worry, a Ghost 2 immobiliser is what stops the van being driven away — £449, fitted at your home or depot.

For what a barrel costs across makes, see the ignition barrel replacement cost guide. For everything we do on Ford, see our Ford key services page, and for other vans the van key replacement service.
