Below: how to tell what's actually wrong (it's often not the key), what to try in the first five minutes, what each airport is like to reach, and what to have ready when we arrive.
An airport lockout is the same fault as any other lockout — but the situation isn't. You've been travelling for hours, the car has sat for a week or two in the open, your documents are in a suitcase, and the long-stay car park is a bus ride from the terminal. Three things make it different:
Time in the car park. Two weeks parked drains a marginal car battery and a tired fob battery at the same time. A car that "won't start" after a holiday is more often a battery than a key — which is why we ask what the dashboard does before we set off.
Access. Long-stay, mid-stay and short-stay car parks all have barriers, and some have ANPR. We drive in like any visitor, find your bay and do the job there. You don't need to move the car and you don't need permission from anyone — it's your car, in a public car park.
Documents. Most people don't travel with their V5C. That's fine: we verify ownership at the car with photo ID and something that links you to the vehicle — an insurance app, a breakdown-cover app, a finance email. Have one of those open on your phone before we arrive.
Try all four doors and the boot — roughly one in six "locked out" calls we attend turn out to have a door that was never locked. Then check whether your car has an app that unlocks it remotely: Tesla, BMW, Mercedes me, Volvo, VW We Connect and several others can open the car from your phone if you set it up before you travelled. It takes a minute to check and it's free.
If the fob does nothing after a fortnight in the car park, the fob battery is the first suspect. Almost every modern car has a backup: a hidden emergency blade inside the fob to open the driver's door, and a spot on the start button or steering column where the car can read a dead fob if you hold it right against it. Your handbook shows both. If the car starts that way, all you need is a £2 coin battery from the terminal shop — not a locksmith.

If a spare exists at home, someone can bring it — sometimes that's the cheapest answer. Do the sum honestly: their return journey, plus your wait in the car park, plus the hourly parking rate ticking while you wait. If the spare is an hour each way and the person is available now, wait for it. If it's further, later, or nobody's home, a locksmith at the bay is usually faster and often cheaper once the parking is counted.
This is the one people dread on the way back from a holiday, and it's the most routine job on this page.
