If your Mercedes won't start — but the battery is fine, the key fob lights up, and you're sure you're using the right key — there's a strong chance you're dealing with Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) failure. It's one of the most common issues on Mercedes-Benz vehicles built between roughly 2000 and 2015, and it's one of the most expensive problems if you take it to a main dealer.
The good news: Royale Car Keys can repair Mercedes EIS failures at your location across London and Kent — usually same-day, for a fraction of what the dealer charges. This guide explains exactly what EIS is, how to recognise the symptoms, why it happens, and what to expect when you call us.
If your Mercedes is stranded right now, call 07777 676261. We typically arrive within an hour across our service area.
EIS stands for Electronic Ignition Switch. On Mercedes-Benz vehicles, it's the electronic module that authenticates your key and authorises the vehicle to start. Unlike a traditional mechanical ignition barrel, the EIS communicates with the engine control unit (ECU), the key, and the immobiliser system electronically.
When you insert your Mercedes key, the EIS:
If any part of this electronic handshake fails, the car simply won't start — even though every mechanical component might be perfectly fine.
The EIS is sometimes referred to as EZS (the German abbreviation: Elektronisches Zündschloss) or ELV (Electronic Steering Lock — closely related). They're often discussed together because their failure modes overlap.
These are the most common signs of Mercedes EIS failure:
If you're seeing more than one of these symptoms on a Mercedes from approximately 2000–2015, EIS failure is by far the most likely cause.
Mercedes EIS failures can occur on virtually any Mercedes from this era, but these are the chassis codes we see most frequently:
At Royale Car Keys, we service all Mercedes EIS issues — there's no model-year cutoff or "we only do certain chassis" restriction. If your Mercedes won't start and the symptoms above match, call us.
EIS failure is rarely a single dramatic event. It's almost always gradual electronic component degradation:
It's not a design flaw exactly — it's just that this generation of Mercedes electronics, after 15+ years of use, reaches end-of-life. The same way your phone's battery degrades over time. EIS failure isn't your fault, and it isn't preventable.
There are typically two ways to fix Mercedes EIS failure:
The existing EIS module is removed, opened, diagnosed, and repaired component-by-component (re-soldering joints, replacing failed chips, restoring authentication data). This is what we do at Royale Car Keys for the majority of cases — it's faster, cheaper, and keeps the vehicle's original encoding intact.
A completely new (or refurbished) EIS module is fitted and re-paired with the vehicle, key, and ECU. This requires programming and is more expensive, but is sometimes the only viable option when the original module is too damaged to repair.
Our default approach: repair first. Most Mercedes EIS jobs we attend can be repaired without replacement, often same-day at your location. Replacement is reserved for cases where repair isn't possible — and we'll tell you upfront if that's the case.
Here's what to expect when you call us:
1. Phone diagnosis (free). We ask a few questions to confirm it's likely EIS failure rather than a simpler issue. Sometimes a key programming or battery issue mimics EIS symptoms — we don't dispatch unless we're confident there's a real problem.
2. On-site arrival. Our technician arrives in a fully-equipped van with Mercedes-specific diagnostic tools, EIS service equipment, and the parts we typically need.
3. On-vehicle diagnosis. We confirm EIS failure (vs. immobiliser, ECU, or key issues) using proper diagnostic equipment — not guesswork.
4. Same-day repair where possible. Most Mercedes EIS jobs are completed at your location the same day. Sometimes a specific replacement part needs to be ordered from suppliers — when this happens, we tell you upfront, give you a return appointment, and charge nothing until the work is finished.
5. Warranty. All our Mercedes EIS work is backed by warranty — typically 6 months to 2 years depending on the job. The exact warranty is confirmed in writing before work begins.
6. Payment. Card, cash, or bank transfer on the spot. Invoiced billing available for fleet customers.
Transparent flat-rate pricing:
Compare that to a Mercedes main dealer:
We routinely save Mercedes owners £500–£1,200 on identical work, with same-day service at their location. No towing required — we come to wherever the car is stranded.
Our Mercedes EIS service runs 24/7 across:

Is the EIS repair permanent, or will it fail again? A properly repaired Mercedes EIS typically lasts as long as a new one would — several years minimum, often longer. Our work is backed by warranty, so if the same fault recurs within the warranty period, we return at no charge. That said: the rest of the EIS will continue to age, so on a 20-year-old Mercedes, related electronic faults can appear over time elsewhere in the vehicle.
Can you repair a Sprinter van EIS too? Yes. Sprinters from this era share the same EIS architecture as Mercedes passenger cars. We service Sprinter EIS faults regularly, including for fleet customers.
My Mercedes was towed to a dealer who quoted £1,200 — can I cancel and use you instead? Yes — call us first. We can usually quote over the phone within minutes, and arrange recovery from the dealer if needed. Many of our Mercedes customers come to us after getting a dealer shock-quote.
Does your repair affect my warranty or insurance? No. EIS repair is a standard automotive electronics service. It doesn't void manufacturer warranties (which are expired on most affected vehicles anyway), and insurers don't penalise it.
Will I need a new key after the EIS is repaired? Usually not — your existing keys continue to work after the repair. In rare cases where the EIS authentication data is corrupted beyond recovery, key re-programming may be needed. We'll tell you upfront if this applies.
Can you also install vehicle security to prevent further problems? Yes. We install Ghost 2 and CAN Phantom aftermarket immobilisers, which add electronic protection layered on top of the factory EIS. See our Ghost 2 vs CAN Phantom comparison.
For other ignition issues that aren't EIS-specific, see our general ignition barrel repair guide.
If your Mercedes is stranded with suspected EIS failure, don't pay the dealer £1,000+ before getting a second opinion. Most cases we attend are repairable on-site, same-day, for a fraction of the cost.
